How to Read Your Meter
Easy to Use Guide on Reading your Meter

- Read the dials ‘backward’ from right to left.
- Write down the number that the pointer has just passed for each dial. Read the first dial clockwise, the second dial counterclockwise and alternate according to the arrow guides.
- Write down the numbers for each dial reading from right to left to get the total kilowatt-hours registered on the meter. In the example below, the number is 19375.
- Similar to your car’s odometer, if over the years the last dial of the meter completes a full revolution (100,000 kilowatt-hours on a five-dial meter), add a “1” in front of the next reading to determine the total number of kilowatt-hours used (this would now be a 6-digit number).
